Le tondo est une œuvre d’art circulaire qui existe depuis l’Antiquité mais c’est à la Renaissance qu’il est devenu le véhicule de nombreux chefs-d’œuvre de Michaelangelo, Parmigiano et Raphael. L’un de ses principaux avantages est qu’il invite le spectateur à se concentrer sur le sujet – vous n’avez qu’à penser au microscope – en éliminant ou en supprimant tout besoin de fond traditionnel. Contrairement à la peinture de paysage traditionnelle où tout est vu de loin, le tondo accentue ce que l’artiste Susan G. Scott tente d’accomplir dans son travail, c’est-à-dire d’amener le spectateur « dans » le paysage. Les deux tondi que nous vous présentons ici font partie de son dernier corpus de travail dans lequel elle fait des allers-retours entre la couleur et le noir et blanc.

The tondo (a round work of art) has been around since antiquity but it was during the Renaissance that it became a vehicle for many masterpieces by Michaelangelo, Parmigiano and Raphael. One of the principal advantages of the circular work of art is that it invites you to zero in on the subject – think microscope – by eliminating or making redundant any need for traditional background. This accentuates what Susan G. Scott is trying to achieve in her work – to put the viewer “in” the landscape – up close and personal – as an alternative to the traditional landscape painting wherein everything is seen from a distance. Presented here are two tondi which are part of her latest body of work where she goes back and forth between colour and black and white.
